Collaborating with individuals, architects, interior designers and private collectors to make unique works for unique spaces

Inspired by explorative pieces, commissioned works are developed to compliment a client’s distinct vision. Centred on the space. Often drawing on established design languages. Commission pieces are a unique response to a collaborative brief, making each piece a unique edition.

The Process

Jan is available for custom design work, taking reference from his existing portfolio, to work on one-of, bespoke briefs. Commissions are collaborative in nature, starting with a phone call, or in person conversation about the specific needs, ideas, and budget of the project. Through the design process Jan will explore possible outcomes with you until a final design and price is reached. The design fee is usually charged at 10% of the overall project cost and is requested upfront to start the design process.

Once the making process has begun orders are usually completed inside a 10 week turnaround time, unless otherwise agreed during the initial design phase. When complete, delivery is made to location at an agreed additional charge using a white glove delivery service for product safety.

The studio also deals with unique commercial design and build projects for retail, hotels, and hospitality, this includes both free standing and fitted projects. To discuss your needs, contact the studio directly.

  • Jan’s studio brings together true craftsmanship and contemporary design to create collectable furniture with exceptional quality and finish. All the pieces in Jan’s collection are made in his Birmingham based workshop where he priorities traditional techniques to enable control and creative expression. Jan works alongside a network of time-served craftspeople to enable an artisan finish across projects.

  • Jan prefers to work with British hardwoods such as Ash and Oak due their flexible properties and open grain, although a much wider range of temperate timbers are available. All woods are sourced from local suppliers and hand-picked on a project-by-project bases. A combination of traditional and contemporary techniques such as steam bending, freeform lamination, and hand carving are used to work woods into form. For finishing, natural blend oils are favoured to protect surfaces whilst maintaining their organic sense.

  • Commissioned projects are flexible in both cost and requirements.

A 10% design fee is charged upfront following an initial conversation. This serves as a commitment to progress to the design stage and is taken off the final invoice should you go ahead with your order.

At the end of the design process a final budget will be agreed at which point the first 50% of the final invoice will be requested. The outstanding amount will be requested on completion of the project, in time for the agreed delivery date.

  • Lead-times vary on a project-by-project bases, but every effort is made to accommodate specific deadlines. As a standard, lead-times are between 4-12 weeks with most projects being completed in under 10 weeks.
